History of TVRD

2006/2007- The Birth of TVRD

The creation of Treasure Valley Roller Derby started with  4 Home Teams:, B-Town Battalion (Camo & Purple – Military Vibe), Cell Block B (Orange – Prison Jumpsuit vibe), Devil’s Darlings (Black & Red – Demon vibes), The Derailers (Blue & Grey – Train Conductor vibes)

TVRD All Stars Travel Team created.

2009

During this time period TVRD made the decision to dissolve home teams due to lack of numbers and to focus on bringing unity to the league.

Created B Team – The Boise River Rollers for those not ready for the All Stars.

2010

1st Spudtown Knockdown Tournament hosted at Century Link Arena, Labor Day Weekend. This tournament would become a favorite with officials because of TVRD’s hospitality. Perks like rotating home cooked meals and secluded officials areas/lounges became the expectation for other tournaments by officials. Tournaments started to become more popular because teams could get several WFTDA sanctioned games in one travel weekend. Spudtown was popular with lower-ranked teams to get some games under their belt. The tournament was in September the first couple of years, but moved to Springtime to accommodate WFTDA playoff season in the fall. Unfortunately, the tournament was discontinued somewhere around 2016 due to lack of volunteers/support stepping up to run the next one within the TVRD league.

2011

Joined WFTDA. This was not an easy task, mainly because WFTDA teams didn’t want to play non-WFTDA teams because of ranking and cost to travel, but a certain number of games with WFTDA teams was required for entry. TVRD had a hard time getting the games needed and advanced notice of teams coming to Boise, which paperwork was due a little more than a month ahead and we weren’t getting commitments in time to file paperwork.

2012

TVRD was using a old floor from a soccer camp to lay over the ice at Century Link Arena, that was sometimes covered in mud when they would take it from storage. To avoid this, TVRD invested $22K on a full sport court floor which was used for one week at Rollercon in Las Vegas. It was a major upgrade for their games held at Century Link Arena. Following that TVRD focused on ranking in WFTDA.

2013

The first WFTDA D2 tournament in 2013 was remarkable for TVRD because their invitation to the tournament was a result of higher ranked teams declining to go. TVRD came into the tournament as the bottom seed, and incredibly won the game against the #2 seed the first night after upsetting the #7 seed earlier that same day. They advanced to the semi-finals, where they lost by only 9 points in a back-and-forth game that could have gone either way. They left Des Moines with Bronze medals around their necks after defeating #1 seeded Fabulous Sin City Rollergirls, and they weren’t even supposed to be there!

2014

2015

2016

2017

For the 4th time, our TVR All Stars have qualified for Division 2 playoffs.  The All Stars finished out the season ranked 54, earning the 13th seed in the Pittsburgh, PA tournament.

2018

2019

2020

TVRD was prepped and ready for a great season with lots of travel, drafting new league members, and a full season of home games, but March of 2020, roller derby came to a halt. TVRD cancelled all games, all practices, and went virtual. Leadership team members met regularly to monitor the state of the pandemic and how to keep skaters safe. By the end of 2020, realization was setting in that the pandemic distribution was going to be a long term struggle for the league.

2021

The pandemic had shut down roller derby world wide. Many leagues left WFTDA due to the strict protocols but TVRD stuck with it and struggled with virtual practices over Zoom. When numbers of infection came down enough in the Treasure Valley, TVRD had a summer out outdoor distanced, no contact, practices. By fall, restrictions loosened enough to have a Halloween trail skate on the Boise Greenbelt. No derby bouts were happening.

2022

In April of 2022, with the pandemic numbers coming down and WFTDA’s regulations with COVID, TVRD was finally able to practice on a more normal schedule. To kick off the year, TVRD hosted officials clinics followed by the first tournament since the pandemic. ‘Bout Time round robin tournament happened in June at Eagle Skate Park. In October, TVRD traveled to Carson City Nevada to compete in the Battle for the Silver Skate Tournament. TVRD played three games, won all three, and skated away with the Silver Skate!

2023

In 2023, TVRD launched their first Home Teams Season! Home Teams used to fill in throughout the competitive season. With separating out the Home Teams season there was three months of dedicated Home Teams competition before entering the normal competitive season. 2023 also marked the return of the Boise River Rollers as TVRD’s membership grew.

Practice & Venue Locations

Practice spaces:

“The Drome” – The Rollerdrome in Nampa

“The Hole” – Tiny Warehouse on Americana x River St

“ESP” for Eagle Skate Park as we call it but it is actually Eagle Sports Complex. Outdoor flat slab of concrete in Eagle. There were often times when all we had was ESP. We would not be able to practice in the winter and do conditioning and rules study instead. There were many freezing windy days out in Eagle where we would practice to train for tournaments for D2 ranking.

“The Big Hole” – Big Warehouse on River x 10th. This was 2009 after the economic collapse and commercial property was cheap.

“The Irving Hole” – Mechanic Shop on Irving St with cars with mattresses leaning against them, tires around the I-beams, and glass windows along the 2nd straightaway.

“The Wood Shed” – Wood Shop on 44th x Chinden with saws and wood-working equipment somewhat close to the track, had to skate through sawdust to go to the bathroom.

“The Barn” – An unheated barn without running water in Meridian on Main x Bower Street with mice and birds living in the rafters and walls. Here, the sport court floor came in handy as the concrete floor had significant damage and was woefully uneven.

“TVS” – Treasure Valley Skate

Venues:

Ada County Fairgrounds

WFTDA Rankings

“The WFTDA Rankings Algorithm is built on several formulas that calculate a weighted average of all games played in a 12-month period. This section details how these formulas are calculated. A team’s ranking is determined by comparing its Rankings Point Average to that of other teams. Rankings are calculated at the end of every month.”
